Coonabarabran · 2006-10-17 17:59

Last weekend Tomoko went to Cairns to meet up with her mum so I took a little trip of my own to Coonabarabran. It's about 8 hours both ways on the bike.

One thing I didn't realise about driving in the outback is how dangerous it is at night. Roos are pretty big.. I saw a few that would have been at least my height (5"10). Running into one of those on my bike would be like hitting a cow - I'd be dead for sure. The thought of that kinda slowed me down, so I didn't arrive in Coona till about 11pm.

I've gotten really comfortable with high speeds now. I got my bike up to 135kph on the way up and averaged around 110.

Spent a lovely day relaxing by the pool and wandering around the area.

The way back was un-eventful until I hit Lithgow, which is the start of the Blue Mountains. Dark clouds started to roll in as I climbed the mountain and fog came out of nowhere. Before I knew it, I couldn't see 10 metres ahead of me. Kinda makes for a slow trip. And a fscking freezing one.

Have some photos. Full set from this expedition here

interesting shots. i’ve been told for years that parts of Australia looks identical to Northern California and i’d have to say from this collection of photographs here, they were right. the one with rocks in the hillside and rolling hills in the background is just like here in the wine country and the shot with the fire danger sign might as well be right down the road from my house…

i updated your link to point here now, y0.
