The end of my provisional license is fast approaching, and it's time to get rid of the old Hyosung and get a new bike. It's pretty exciting, anything I get will be about 10 times as fast as what I've got at the moment!
I gave it a lot of thought and I've decided that a I want a naked. Not that I don't like sports bikes (the Hyo looks so hot for a 250), but I want something different, something I can maybe ride up to Brissy on and not have my ass destroyed in the process.
I considered a Buell 'cos I loved the Harley sound of all the ones I've seen, but was talked out of it by The Hoon. Apparently,
- Agricultural technology. Harley Davidson haven't changed their stuff very much at all from the original.
- They are low geared, meaning high speed cruising would be a pain. But they would do good wheelies, which I'm not interested in doing.
- Short wheel base means harder to control at higher speeds
- For my second bike, I want something more forgiving. I can totally understand this; currently, I can treat the throttle of the Hyosung like an On/Off switch
- The only guys who sell them in Sydney are a bunch of pricks.
Next choice is a Triumph speed triple. Billed as a "Hooligan bike", it looks fucken awesome (and way tougher than the Buell). I'm going to do a test ride early December and see how it actually feels like to ride.
No other options I feel like pursuing at the moment, but I might test ride as many bikes as I can before putting down the cash.
Speaking of cash, never, NEVER do financing directly at the dealers when you buy your first bike (or car, I guess). Talk about a rip off. It's a secured loan, meaning that they put you on a 5 year payback plan with penalties for paying it off early. I've just realised that I've been stung by that with Yamaha Motor Finance. What a rip! If I want to pay off the bike in December when I get my full license, I'll have to pay $1400 more than what I actually paid for the bike in the first place!
I've been had, but live and learn I guess.
